We always planned to spend at least two months in Tasmania with the van. Unfortunately, due to the limited ferry availability, we could only stay for three weeks.

Even before going there, we created a list of 12 things we would like to experience:

1️⃣ See the Little Penguins in Burnie
2️⃣ Hike to the summit of Cradle Mountain
3️⃣ See at least one Tasmanian Devil (@devilsatcradle)
4️⃣ Visit Montezuma Falls
5️⃣ Buy fresh bread from the Bruny Bakery (@thebrunybaker )
6️⃣ Visit MONA Museum (@monamuseum )
7️⃣ Go on the speed boat tour to Tasman Island Cruises with @pennicottjourneys
8️⃣ See wombats in Maria Island
9️⃣ Hike to the Summit of Mt Amos

Lucky for us, we ticked all of these items in our 3 weeks in Tasmania.

10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT TASMANIA BEFORE YOU GO

Are you planning a holiday to Tasmania? We recently spent three weeks there, so create a list with some useful things to know in advance!

🧅Dress in layers: You’ll experience the 4 seasons in a day, almost every day

🛣️Not all roads are sealed. To get to some of the nicest places there, we had to go through some tough roads. It's nothing that 2WD cars can't handle, though; just drive carefully.

☀️ The best time to visit is, in our opinion, during summer. December—Enjoy the best of Hobart's festival season with food, wine, music, art, and culture. February—Swim, bushwalk, and mountain bike and enjoy the most settled weather of the year. March—Fill up on fresh apples, fruit, and berries from Tasmania's network of providers.

🚘 Don’t forget your National Parks Pass: Tasmania has 19 national parks, covering approximately 40% of the state, so you’ll likely need to purchase a National Parks Pass.

❗Phone signal can be unreliable: if you're planning to visit more remote areas of Tasmania (where the best free camps are), you'll likely not have phone reception.

💦 Is it easy to find water sources? We had no issues finding water on the East Coast, but finding water sources on the West Coast was pretty challenging.

🚁 Drones are not allowed in National Parks in Tasmania. Signs are everywhere warning about this. Seek permission if you are unsure.

⚠️ Drive slowly and watch out for wildlife crossings - Tasmania is home to SO MUCH wildlife. Unfortunately, we saw more roadkill in Tasmania than anywhere else in Australia. PLEASE drive carefully – especially at dawn and dusk.

🍎 Don’t bring fresh produce into Tasmania, even from mainland Australia!! Not allowed.

💰There are no toll roads. Depending on how long you have in Tasmania, you’re unlikely to drive for more than 2 hours at a time, and thankfully, there are no toll roads!! How good is that?

🤑 HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU NEED TO TRAVEL AROUND A

🤑 HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU NEED TO TRAVEL AROUND AUSTRALIA? 💸

This question has no one answer: It depends on the style of travel you are going to do, if you are starting with a source of income, how long you intend to go for, etc.

What to take into consideration if you want to estimate how much money you need to save:

1️⃣ Estimate how much your monthly/weekly cost will be on the road

We calculated this by using the average food spending while living in a house. We also watched videos of couples who travelled Australia to get an idea of how much they spent per week. Based on this, we estimated monthly costs and multiplied it by the initial 12 months we wanted to have savings for. THIS IS VERY RELATIVE, but to give you an idea, on average, our monthly cost with food is between AUD800 and AUD1,300 (for a couple).

2️⃣ Save some money to keep you going until you find a source of income

If you don't yet have a source of income that allows you to live on the road, it's worth saving some money to support yourself in the first few months (try to consider at least 6 months) and try to make things happen in the meantime and find a way to generate income.

3️⃣ If you've got some money, don't let it sit still

As we saved for our trip, we invested our money. Financially, it doesn't make sense to leave money in the bank account being eaten by inflation.

❗️HOW TO SPEND A DAY ON MARIA ISLAND❗️

The place that surprised us the most in Tasmania was MARIA ISLAND. Not having heard of it before arriving, we were so glad we took a day to visit it.

The best part was definitely seeing so many wombats in such a short amount of time. The 115.5-square-kilometre island is about 20 kilometres long from north to south and, at its widest, is about 13 kilometres from west to east.

A car-free island, Maria Island is a 30-minute ferry ride from Triabunna, about 1.5 hours from Hobart, and you basically have 2 options for exploring the island: on foot or by bike. We hired bikes and were glad we did, we were able to see so much more than we would have if walking.

In addition to the wombats, other attractions for you to visit on the island are:
1️⃣ Fossil Cliff Quarry - where you'll find 500 – 360 million years old fossils
2️⃣ Four Mile Beach - one of the bluest waters I have ever seen on a beach
3️⃣ Painted Cliffs - one of the must-see attractions on the island, these are cliffs with incredible colours

You can see all these in a day, but you can also spend the night if you want. Rooms are available in the old penitentiary building at Darlington. There is a large camping area behind the sand dunes at Darlington. Camping fees apply, but there’s no need to book. There are also free campsites available.

No food is available for purchase on the island, and limited untreated water. So go prepared!!
